History

London’s West End has transformed massively over the years. While some of the district’s oldest theatres are now unrecognisable, the area’s landscape has transformed greatly with award-winning shows, blockbuster productions running for decades, a great dining scene and some sought-after 5-star hotels in London West End!

Set in the heart of London’s cultural scene, the buzzing West End comes from a storied history. After the Puritan ban on London theatres in 1642, the theatres started to thrive in the 1660s and have been entertaining locals and visitors alike for over 350 years now! The oldest theatre in West End which is still in use today is the Theatre Royal Dury Lane, opened in 1663 and has been a ‘royal favourite’ ever since its development. Steadily, more theatres started to call West End their home, including the Theatre Royal Haymarket opened in 1720, followed by the Adelphi Theatre in 1806. It was after the Theatres Act of 1843 which encouraged live performances, that London’s Theatreland was born.
