London is famous for many things. It has amazing history in the form of Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the Tower of London. It also has a thriving nightlife, with more bars and restaurants than anyone could ever visit.
Equally as famous is London’s thriving live entertainment scene. There are few better places to catch a show or watch some comedy than the many venues the capital has to offer.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best entertainment on offer this June in London.
Son of Rambow
Originally a film, which came out back in 2007, Son of Rambow is a funny, engaging and heart-warming story about two boys from very different backgrounds. The two boys – Will and Lee – find friendship in one another and, this being a play set in the 1980s, start a quest to remake Rambo: First Blood with nothing more than their imaginations and a rudimentary video camera.
There’s a great deal going on with the families of the two boys, and the story is as much about the hardships of life in general as it is about two boys and their creative quest. The whole thing is scored with a great 80’s soundtrack. If you get the chance, check it out at The Other Palace theatre. It’s only a 30-minute jaunt from M by Montcalm, Shoreditch, London tech City, and Son of Rambow is a great way to round off a day in the city. It’s sweet, sad and very affecting.
The King and I
Sometimes a classic is called so for a reason. The King and I has a grand, sweeping story, raw emotion and amazing song and dance numbers. This production at The London Palladium brings Kelly O’Hara and Ken Watanabe together once more to reprise roles they are absolutely perfect for. Watanabe is at once charming, engaging and then, at the flip of a switch, cold and stern. O’Hara and he play perfectly off one another and the production design is second to none. It really is a classic piece of musical theatre and everyone should see it live at least once.
If you’re staying in the London City Suites by Montcalm, the journey time from the hotel to the theatre is about 25-minutes.
The Comedy About A Bank Robbery
First premiering in 2016, The Comedy About A Bank Robbery received rave reviews and is now booking all the way through until November 2018. Running at the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly, it’s only half an hour away from M by Montcalm, Shoreditch, London Tech City.
A classic caper story involving a diamond heist and multiple protagonists, the tone is zany, inventive and fast. It’s another offering from Mischief Theatre, who found success with their previous show ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ and is probably even more polished and funnier than that very popular offering. It’s perfect for a fun night out, and you’ll probably leave the theatre with aching sides.
