Top 6 museums in London you probably haven’t heard of

London is packed full of some of the most impressive and world-renowned museums in the world, but the city also offers more than its fair share of hidden gems which you may not have heard of. Read on to discover some of London’s lesser-known treasures…

Geffrye Museum

This marvellous museum includes a chance to step back in time and discover the history of the Almshouse, once designed for the poorest in society. Fully restored Almshouses and stunning surrounding gardens tell a compelling story of 18th century charity as well as including structures from as early as the 16th century. Fans of architecture and cultural history will particularly enjoy this museum during their visit to our Montcalm Royal London House.

Bank of England Museum

Learning more about the story of the Bank of England might sound like a strange way to spend your time in London, but the Bank wields significant influence not only over the city, but the country and much of the world – so discovering how it came to be is a fascinating journey. Whilst staying at M by Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City, why not take a trip into the past of this British institution, as well as discovering the true origin of bank notes and taking advantage of the chance to pick up a real gold bar (just make sure you put it back before you leave).

The Old Operating Theatre

A visit to Europe’s oldest operating theatre gives a sometimes gruesome but always compelling vision of how far surgery has developed since its earliest days, including information on the sometimes questionable hygiene and procedures used by these historic medical professionals. The room is unassuming enough, but includes quite ‘hands-on’ demonstrations of some of the techniques which were once used in historic surgery – and dates all the way back to 1822.

Museum of Brands and Packaging

A nostalgic treat for all to enjoy, the Museum of Brands and Packaging gathers together the wrappers and packets of yesteryear in an effort to preserve a comprehensive social history of Britain’s changing attitudes to commerce and the role this plays in society. Easily accessed from the Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City, the museum is fascinating to explore, including both iconic and forgotten brands to create something truly special.

Horniman Museum

A museum filled with curiosities from all around the world, the Horniman Museum offers some of the most bizarre and intriguing items you are likely to see in the city, including everything from musical instruments to cultural acquisitions and trophies from exploration of other continents. There is even a large selection of stuffed animals. The sparse surroundings provide the perfect palette for allowing the objects themselves to take centre stage.

Museum of Childhood

A branch of the V&A, the Museum of Childhood includes lots of familiar items from childhood including toys of yesteryear, and exciting exhibitions and events exploring the meaning of childhood.
