With so much to see and do in London, it can be difficult to narrow down your list of chosen activities to fit into the space of a few days. There are, however, a number of sights and sounds that you simply must take the time to enjoy when you’re in the city.

High on this list ought to be a trip to the West End, which is known throughout the world for being home to some of the biggest and best theatre shows. What’s more, London’s theatre industry attracts some of the best-known stars from the entertainment world, many of whom are keen to further their reputations on the stage.

At the moment, for example, US TV star Angela Lansbury is starring in a new production of Blithe Spirit, which is being staged at the Gielgud Theatre. The 88-year-old has already received enviable reviews from critics, many of whom have waited years for her to return to[the] West End following an absence of almost 40 years.

For instance, theatre critic Charles Spencer observed that she was on “sparkling form”.”Thirty-five years ago I remember being bowled over by Lansbury’s performance as Mrs Lovett in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd on Broadway. She brings a similar energy and high definition wit to Madame Arcati,” he noted. “Her voice swoops and soars with superb grandeur and her extraordinary dance routine, in which she seems physically to vibrate as she goes into a trance, is a wonder to behold. “He said, too, that Lansbury’s performance will live long in the memory of anyone who gets to see the show.

Elsewhere, the Independent’s Paul Taylor said that Lansbury’s character is a “deliciously erratic blend of bohemian lady novelist and girl guide”. But what if this doesn’t sound like your kind of show? Well, don’t worry, as there are always loads of great theatre productions being staged throughout the year.

You’re sure to find something to match your taste and budget. After booking a show, it couldn’t be easier to check into one of our top hotels in the West End to make the absolute most of your stay in the capital.
