Excitement builds towards London Marathon

London is something of a paradise for sports fans, hosting loads of huge events throughout the year including Wimbledon, the FA Cup Final and international cricket.

But perhaps the biggest annual sporting event staged in the capital is the London Marathon, which attracts many of the best athletes from around the world, as well as people hoping to raise some much-needed cash for their chosen charity.

Millions of people turn out onto the streets of the city to cheer on the stars and the plucky souls – and the 2014 edition of the event promises to be among the best ever. That is, in part, because one of the world’s greatest and most popular athletes,  Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie, is to set the pace for the upcoming event.

Organizers have confirmed that he will pace a world record attempt in London, where he will lead out a field that will feature a number of the best runners of all time. From a British viewpoint, the main point of interest will be double Olympic champion Mo Farah, who has switched his attention to the marathon after enjoying incredible success on the track. It remains to be seen, however, whether he is able to transfer his talents to the longer event as he prepares for the next Olympics in Brazil in 2016.

Previewing the upcoming event, London race director Hugh Brasher said: “We are delighted to announce that Haile Gebrselassie has agreed to run as a pacemaker in this year’s race.”He added: “Haile is an icon of distance running, a man who has broken 27 world records on the track and road during his long and brilliant career, and we can’t think of anyone better to set our elite men up for a crack at the world marathon record.”

So, if you fancy seeing the great man in action, head to London in April and join the thousands of people who will be cheering him on.
