A Longstanding Tradition
The enduring tradition of afternoon tea was first popularised by Anna, Duchess of Bedford, in 1840. Despite living in a household which favoured a late dinner (in accordance with the style of the time), she noticed how increasingly hungry she was as the afternoon wore on, and so began asking for a tray to be prepared for her at 4pm, consisting of tea and sweet treats like small cakes and sandwiches. After a time, she started inviting her friends to join her for her ‘afternoon tea’ – and so the tradition was born.
By the 1880s, afternoon tea had become a widespread and popular event amongst society ladies, often requiring them to change for the occasion, which was generally served in the drawing room between the hours of 4 and 5pm.
Nowadays, afternoon tea is a mainstay of British society. Whilst by no means as rigidly enshrined as it might have once been, it still makes for a great way to celebrate and catch up with friends in beautiful surroundings, and is an absolute must-do for visitors to Britain’s capital!
