As it is located just across the road from the Barbican Arts Centre, guests staying at London City Suites by Montcalm would be forgiven for not venturing any further afield for a slice of the capital’s culture. Event: The Sleeping Beauty, performed by The Royal Ballet
Location: Royal Opera House
Date and time: Evening performances 7pm, Saturday matinees 1.30pm, until March 14th
Getting there from London City Suites: If you have the time, the Royal Opera House is around a half-hour walk from the hotel. Otherwise, a taxi to the venue door is much more convenient.
The Royal Opera House is hosting the 70th anniversary celebrations of the first performance of Tchaikovsky’s beloved The Sleeping Beauty by The Royal Ballet, bringing the timeless fairytale to life for all ages. With stunning costumes, mesmerising music and a classic story, this event is not to be missed for ballet lovers and fans of the age-old tale.
Event: Hair by Sam McKnight
Location: Somerset House
Date and time: 10am-6pm each day, until March 12th
Getting there from London City Suites: The number 76 bus goes from Silk Street close to the hotel directly to Somerset House, or if the weather’s nice, it’s around a 30-minute walk to the venue.
Hairstylist to the stars Sam McKnight has been responsible for creating some of the most iconic styles of the past four decades, including Tilda Swinton’s David Bowie-inspired look, and the late Princess Diana’s slicked-back bob. Photographs and other exhibits celebrating McKnight’s 40-year career are currently on display at Somerset House, with a selection of the 190 Vogue magazine covers he has worked on a particular exhibition highlight.
Event: Motown: The Musical
Location: The Shaftesbury Theatre
Date and time: Most evenings and some afternoons until October 28th
Getting there from London City Suites: The Shaftesbury Theatre is just over half an hour’s walk away from the hotel, with plenty of London cabs available for those wanting to be dropped at the door.
Who doesn’t love Motown? Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder; all of these and more are celebrated in this uber-fun long-running musical theatre show at The Shaftesbury Theatre, which explores the life of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy with a soundtrack from the era’s greats.
Event: Life in the Medieval Palace
Location: Tower of London
Date and time: 9am to 4.30pm, until February 10th, then again from February 20th to April 13th
Getting there from London City Suites: Hop on the Circle Line at Moorgate (just around the corner from the hotel), heading towards Edgware Road. Get off at Tower Hill and you won’t be able to miss the historic tower.
History lovers of all ages are bound to be fascinated by the Tower of London’s current exhibition, which explores what life was like for royalty, guards and prisoners in the building’s medieval days. Visitors can step back into the year 1299 during the reign of King Edward I, also known as the Hammer of the Scots, which makes for a bloody, thrilling journey of discovery.
