Should you have a little one who prefers the idea of growing up to be David Attenborough than David Beckham, then ZSL London Zoo may just have the perfect day for them. Indeed, if to their mind at least, spending hour after hour meeting, caring for and feeding the likes of meerkats, alpacas and giraffes sounds like bliss, then this activity-packed special day will surely be right up their street.
Courtesy of the venue that’s universally acclaimed around the world as one of the greatest zoos on the planet, the Junior Keeper for a Day experience is a fantastic opportunity for budding naturalists everywhere – whose families may well be considering a short-break spent in the UK capital – to discover just what it’s like (all the rewards and, yes, all the challenges) of working as an animal keeper in an environment like the one to be found at this globally famous zoo in London Regent’s Park.
Available for those aged between 11 and 15 years-old, the day-long activity enables them to get up, close and personal with varied species of mammals that call the zoo home. Each and every ‘junior keeper’ gets the chance then to discover what makes up the daily routine and practice of their older counterparts employed by ZSL at the Central London venue, in addition to coming into contact with not just the aforementioned alpacas, giraffes and meerkats, but also coatis, donkeys, llamas and small primates.
Split into groups of five on the day, young ones will follow around a seasoned keeper, witnessing and experiencing all they do, while getting kitted out in their very own ‘junior keeper’ gear (a t-shirt, cap and more). Although, it should be noted, parents – or guardians – are required to accompany young participants on the day; yet, this is of course the mini-keepers’ day, so old ’uns won’t actually be able to take part (nor have access to the zoo’s behind-the-scenes areas), but will find there’s many a fantastic photo opportunity with which to remember a terrific day out for the whole family.
And, as a day spent at the sensational attraction that’s ZSL London Zoo (with its extraordinarily diverse collection of 750 separate species in many different enclosures) truly is one to be sampled and savoured by the entire family, it undoubtedly makes for a great venue to visit during a break in the UK capital – and especially one that’s enjoyed in the luxurious environs of the very nearby Montcalm Marble Arch hotel London.
So, if one of your kids aspires to working with animals once they’ve grown up and have to find something to do with themselves in the big, wide world, then this is an experience that may not just be lots of fun, but also genuinely informative, educational and rather revealing. A fun-filled three-and-a-half-hour encounter that includes official ZSL clothing they can wear and take away with them as well as a 20 percent discount on the entry tickets for the rest of the family – who could turn their snouts… sorry, noses up at that!
Note: The Junior Keeper for a Day experience takes place at ZSL London Zoo on weekdays during all UK school holidays (February, Easter, May, summer, October and Christmas).
