Now that the Easter break is over, the long summer holidays are fast approaching, meaning a visit to London will be on the cards for many. As the ever-unpredictable Great British weather can by no means be guaranteed, a trip to the theatre could be the perfect way to reward your little ones for their hard work at school over the past year or for some great exam results.

If they’ve made you particularly proud, why not go all out with a show in the West End and a night away in a five-star hotel? You’ll get to enjoy the experience as well, and the memories will last a lifetime.

Here’s our pick of the best West End shows for all the family, all of which can easily be reached from any of our Montcalm hotels:

Matilda the Musical

The story of Matilda, the smart, bookish heroine of Roald Dahl’s much-loved novel and the subsequent film starring Mara Wilson in the title role, comes to life at the Cambridge Theatre.

Matilda the Musical first opened in the West End in late 2011 and its energetic cast, fantastic songs – penned by Tim Minchin – and brilliant characters make for an unforgettable theatre experience for all the family. With Matilda’s mean parents, the frightening Miss Trunchbull and the simply lovely Miss Honey, the musical will take you on a wonderful uplifting journey through the eyes of a unique little girl.

The Royal Shakespeare Company-produced play has so far won 16 awards for Best Musical and will be touring the UK next year, so make sure you book to see it in its original home before it’s too late.

The Lion King

The Lion

The Lion King is many children’s favourite Walt Disney movie, but seeing the story played out on stage is arguably an even more captivating experience.

This mesmerising play has been running at London’s Lyceum Theatre since 1999 and has previously won the coveted Tony Award for Best Musical. With music penned by Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice, fabulously colourful costumes and a classic story of betrayal, The Lion King is a treat for theatregoers of all ages.

Particular highlights include the famously terrifying yet thrilling stampede scene, while the start of the rousing Circle of Life is guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

One of the most recent additions to the West End, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is the perfect option if there’s a young Potterhead in your family.

Currently playing at London’s Palace Theatre, this magical play is set some years after the end of the last book in the Harry Potter series, with author JK Rowling playing a key role in the development of the new story.

It centres around a now grown-up Harry, Ron and Hermione and their children, as they deal with the legacy of Harry’s fame in defeating Lord Voldemort.

The special effects have been described as spectacular by many, with the staging creating a truly magical world that completely immerses the audience during its two parts, which are designed to be enjoyed as a matinee followed by an evening performance.

Tickets for this play are limited, so make sure you snap them up quickly to prevent your little ones from missing out on this theatrical treat.
